Deputy Director

Democracy 2076, a fiscally sponsored project of NEO Philanthropy, Inc. is seeking a Deputy Director to:

Organizational Values

Democracy 2076’s mission is to build a more responsive, effective, and representative democracy for future generations. Democracy 2076 serves the entire field of democratic renewal, providing strategic foresight resources to national, state, and local organizations working to improve access to individual rights and strengthen democracy.

  • Co–creation: We develop both the what of our strategy and the how alongside our partners. We see our role as holding the space to co-create strategy, not setting it in isolation from the rest of the field.

  • Pro-democracy and non-partisan: We believe to truly have a liberal democracy with respect for individual rights and governance by will of the majority we need to work across partisan lines and with people from diverse backgrounds in order to achieve our common goal of renewing American democracy for the next generation.

  • Starting with those most proximate to the problems: We believe those most proximate to the challenges we’re facing will have unique insights regarding the solutions.

  • Long-term: We believe our unique value-add to the democracy field is holding the space for long-term thinking so that others in the field doing more short-term and urgent work can plug in and use as a resource to coordinate their efforts and strategies.

Job responsibilities

A core function of this role is to provide organizational resilience and share in overlapping responsibilities with the Executive Director including:

  • Strategic leadership across the organization – Strategic thought partner to assist with cross-program design and coordination, fundraising, and organizational development.

  • Fundraising – Responsible for the drafting and submission of grant applications and reports to funders.

  • Communications – Currently, Democracy 2076’s  communications consist of a quarterly e-mail to our listserv and speaking engagements at conferences and gatherings. The Deputy Director would develop a more affirmative communications strategy that could involve public reporting on our work and programs, developing op-eds, and building relationships so Democracy 2076 is an expert source for media and journalists.

  • Represent the organization in public settings–  Attend and participate in events, partner meetings, and speaking engagements.

Qualifications

  • Entrepreneurial – Comfortable supporting program strategy and organizational development from inception.

  • Experience managing and supporting programmatic work – As we plan to hire program directors across each program area, the Deputy Director does not need to be an expert on Democracy 2076’s program areas but they would be essential to the vision setting, and identifying connections and correlations across the areas of work.

  • Experience building systems and processes—As an early-stage startup, we are fiscally sponsored and have operational support. The person in this role will help lead the organizational development, including of our systems and processes as we hire staff and expand our work.

  • Experience working with low-information and low-propensity voters across the ideological spectrum — We want to ensure Democracy 2076 is building a democracy for all Americans so want someone in this role who will bring in perspectives often not heard in the democracy ecosystem.

  • Interest and desire to learn about strategic foresight – Background or experience in strategic foresight is not required, but the ideal candidate should be excited to learn more about futures-thinking and potential opportunities to influence the pro-democracy ecosystem to develop a more long-term approach to the work.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Communications experience – Work with the Executive Director to develop a communications strategy in order to more clearly and effectively inform the field and general public about Democracy 2076’s collective work.
